Provoking Thought

When you're old
and I'm swinging on the angel's star

I'll come back and kiss you.

I wrote this way back when I was in my early 20s.

Recently, this little pome came to mind and I thought I'd shove it up for you all to read.

I love the image, "swinging on the angel's star." It reminds me of the sign for The Blue Moon Tavern in Seattle. Theodore Roethke used to hang out there. Long after, I spent lots of time at the Blue Moon.

This also reminds me of a song I'm sure you know by The Magnetic Fields called "There'll Be Time Enough for Rocking when we're Old":

There'll be time enough for rocking when we're old
We can rock all day and rock in terms of cold
But tonight I think I'd rather just go dancing
There'll be time enough for rocking when we're old, my love

etc. . .

Hello Simon,

You have been so kind through Email, it's been a challenge for me to know how best to reply here, but when I saw your lines here I couldn't help but to feel reminded of Yeats' poem:

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

I hope you like the poem. I suspect you're familiar with the work. So famous. Enjoy!

Ing: I dug out that Fields track as soon as you said it. We rock. Period!

Rayna: My favourite pieces are those that appear to be short, snappy lines but actually contain more than you'd find described on a page. Sometimes you just have to let the words do theie job.

Gina: There is no need for you to say anything; however, the words you've chosen to illustrate your point are perfect.

Hi,
Long time, no blog communication. Yes, I have come by to read, but sadly, haven't sent a comment.

I love the "Provoking Thought". And, of course, Ing and Gina both sent beautiful poems that I think are like minded to this one. I sadly, cannot think of another one. But, thank you all for these gems.

Simon, I really enjoy your blog. Keep writing.

I tried to post this hours ago, trying again.
